Utility company suggestions

The companies who provide the utilities (water, electrical, etc.) to my home usually include suggestions to use their service more effectively.  Effective use generally also means less impact on the environment.  Here is a random collection of suggestions from my utility companies:
  • Installing weatherstripping on exterior doors is an easy and inexpensive way to keep the cold outside and the heat inside.
  • LED lightbulbs use far less electricity than other lighting.  They have a much longer life as well.  Some utilities and governments offer rebates on LED lightbulbs.
  • In the winter, lowering the thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit while you sleep can reduce your heating bill.  My utility company stated the savings can be around 10%, but your actual savings will depend on a variety of factors.
  • Turn off your coffeemaker (and other appliances) when you are done using it.  Some appliances continue to draw electricity when not in use and should be unplugged when you’re not using them.
  • Get your furnace or air conditioner checked and change or clean the filters.  My utility company estimates that routinely replacing or cleaning air filters can reduce an air conditioner’s energy use by up to 15 percent.
  • Programmable thermostats can help save energy by automatically adjusting your home’s temperature based on the time of day.  Programmable thermostats range from fairly simple inexpensive units to smart thermostat systems that can learn your habits.
  • A leaky toilet can waste many gallons of water a day.  If you need to replace the tank valve, hardware stores sell kits that are simple to install.  A leaky sink faucet may only need a new washer.
  • Fat, oil, and grease are the primary cause of problems in sewer lines.  Clogged sewer lines can lead to sewer spills, which can harm the environment and require use of resources to repair.  Don’t pour fat, oil, or grease down the sink.
