Don’t drive around the parking lot looking for a parking spot that is closer to the store. Unless you are ill or handicapped, take the first spot you find so you can turn off your car. Even better, park near the entrance from the street to the parking lot and save that extra minute or two of operating your car’s engine. For most of us, the extra distance we walk will help our health as well.

We live in a semi-arid area where lawns must be watered during the summer. Most mornings in the summer, water running in the storm gutters proves that many homeowners are overwatering. Even if water is abundant in your area, most home lawn sprinklers use drinking water, which means that significant resources are used to get that water to your home. Overwatering can also damage your lawn. Cut back your lawn watering to “just enough”. Here are some ideas:

Most of us compare items for price, quality, color, and function before we select one to buy. Add another comparison factor to the list – packaging. Packaging, which is all of the cardboard, plastic, and metal surrounding the item you actually want, requires resources and energy to produce and transport. Some of the packaging gets recycled but most of it ends up in the landfill. Buying items with less packaging conserves resources and energy. Things to consider when comparing packaging:
One of my readers gave me some important advice for using grass clippings as mulch. If the clippings are newly-cut, spread in thin layers and let dry a little before adding another layer. Fresh grass clippings in thick layers can harm or even kill the nearby plants.
