Most of us associate ceiling fans with moving the air in the house during summer so we feel cooler, and they are very useful in that mode. If you have an air conditioner, the ceiling fan can still save energy. However, ceiling fans can also be useful in winter. Because warm air rises, the air in your house will be warmer near the ceiling, not down where you are sitting or standing. Use of a slow-moving ceiling fan can move that warm air back down toward the floor so you feel warmer. However, the direction the fan turns needs to be reversed in winter. I found a good article that will tell you all about it.

Many people are concerned about the environmental impacts of producing various forms of energy and the petroleum products used to produce plastics. Remember, production is affected by how much consumers buy. If we reduce our use, production will be reduced. If we think about it, most of us can come up with many ideas. A few major areas to consider:
When heating liquids in the microwave, on the stove, or in an electric hot pot, it is easy to let them heat longer than needed. It’s easy to hit one of the speed selections on the microwave or to start water heating and walk away, letting it boil awhile before we get back. Many times, we then need to let the hot water cool a bit before we use it. Experiment with your microwave settings so you know how long it takes to heat beverages to your favorite drinking temperature. Buy a hot pot with an auto shutoff. Stay in the kitchen so you can turn off the heat when the liquid is hot enough.
