Welcome to the 3% sustainability challenge. The challenge (and the blog) is based on the idea that most of us can reduce our impact on the earth by 3% without much effort. Spread across time and a large number of people, the 3% reduction will begin to make a difference. This blog will provide ideas I have developed and information from reliable sources to help you implement the challenge. I am not going to debate whether climate change is caused by people or what our national policies should be. I just believe that we’re using our earth’s resources at a rate that doesn’t provide for future generations. We’re putting a lot of chemicals into our air and water. Every day more habitat is destroyed. So, the point of the 3% challenge is to ask you to make small changes in your daily habits, one at a time. Making some simple lifestyle changes, no matter how small, to reduce your impact is better than doing nothing.
Ideas and information will range from planting native bird-friendly plants in your back yard to reducing energy use in your home; from reducing water consumption to using fewer harsh chemicals. Some of these changes will save you money, too, but the goal is reducing your environmental footprint.
You don’t have to try every suggestion you see on this blog (I won’t either). Just pick a few ideas that work for you and try them. Then try a few more. I’ll keep posting things as I run across them so check back now and then for new ideas, or follow me on Tumblr or Facebook. You can also receive the postings by email. I'll tell you how on the Contact page.
