The US uses 500 million plastic drinking straws a day. I heard that all the restaurants in the Seattle airport are switching to paper straws. Another option is choosing to drink without a straw. If you don’t plan to use a straw in your drink in a restaurant, tell the server when you order, because many restaurants bring the drinks to the table with a straw already in the glass. If the server brings straws separately, it is still best to tell them right away you don’t want the straw because if the straw stays at the table, it it likely to be thrown away unused when you leave.

From the Natural Resources Canada website: “Today, most vehicles are equipped with fuel-injection systems that automatically shut off the flow of fuel to the engine when the accelerator is fully released. In this mode, the decelerating vehicle can be thought of as coasting and using no fuel. When the engine speed drops to idle, the injection system restarts the flow of fuel to ensure that the engine doesn’t stall. Coasting to decelerate also reduces wear and tear on your tires and brakes, which in turn reduces your maintenance, repair, and servicing costs.”

Our regional energy provider has partnered with the public libraries to loan power check meters to households. The meter can be connected to appliances in your home to learn the appliance's current, minimum, and maximum energy use. Knowing which appliances are major energy drains can help you make smarter decisions about energy usage in your home. Perhaps your local library or electricity provider also has these devices for loan.
