Many people enjoy listening to TED talks on a wide variety of topics. The TED organization has launched a new initiative called Countdown. Countdown is a global initiative to champion and accelerate solutions to the climate crisis, turning ideas into action. The Countdown organization includes scientists, activists, entrepreneurs, urban planners, farmers, CEOs, investors, artists, government officials, and others to find the most effective, evidence-based ideas out there. Countdown is hosting a livestream seminar on YouTube at 12 p.m. ET on October 30 to discuss a realistic pathway to a net-zero future. The seminar is produced in collaboration with the UN Climate Conference COP26 and will be shown on TED’s YouTube channel. The Countdown webpage https://countdown.ted.com/ has information on climate change and what you can do, a place to sign up for an email newsletter, and a link to the livestream seminar. Although the webpage doesn’t say, I would assume the seminar will be available later on YouTube for those who cannot watch live.

I found a good article on plastic pollution and trash in the ocean and ways to help reduce the amount that reaches the ocean. This trash degrades marine habitats and creates dangers to marine wildlife who eat it or get tangled in it. Plastic isn’t biodegradable and pieces of it can remain in the environment for hundreds of years. Per the article, “Around 80 percent of marine litter actually originates on land—either swept in from the coastline or carried to rivers from the streets during heavy rain via storm drains and sewer overflows.” In addition, plastic in inland lakes, rivers, and streams creates similar problems. The link below leads to an article with ten ideas for reducing plastic pollution.
