I read recently in Sierra magazine that the average American generates 4.4 pounds of trash a day. The article didn’t say if this amount was calculated before or after recyclables had been removed. Either way, that’s a lot of trash, and reducing your personal total is a good goal. I have read articles and books by people who worked to achieve the goal of sending zero trash to the landfill. Some were able to fit an entire year’s trash in a quart jar. Most of us will have more modest goals for reducing our trash. I’ve provided some ideas and links below. As an experiment, pick a day and try putting all of your trash of that day into a separate bucket. As you put items in the bucket, think about how you could avoid generating the trash or sending each item to a landfill.

Timers for lawn sprinklers are a great convenience. Most people tend to forget about the system once it’s turned on for the year. However, you can manage your system throughout the summer to reduce water use.
Before you leave for vacation or business travel, look around your house or office for electronics or small appliances that can be unplugged to save energy while you are gone. Many items in your house use vampire energy or have indicator lights or digital clocks. Heating or air conditioning settings can be adjusted by a few degrees while you are gone (don’t lower your heat settings too low in winter or you may risk frozen water pipes). Items to consider:
