I read recently in Sierra magazine that the average American generates 4.4 pounds of trash a day. The article didn’t say if this amount was calculated before or after recyclables had been removed. Either way, that’s a lot of trash, and reducing your personal total is a good goal. I have read articles and books by people who worked to achieve the goal of sending zero trash to the landfill. Some were able to fit an entire year’s trash in a quart jar. Most of us will have more modest goals for reducing our trash. I’ve provided some ideas and links below. As an experiment, pick a day and try putting all of your trash of that day into a separate bucket. As you put items in the bucket, think about how you could avoid generating the trash or sending each item to a landfill.
