Food waste

I have seen several estimates of the amount of food that is wasted in the US and around the world.  All the numbers are shockingly high, ranging from 30% to 40%.  The food waste occurs in all portions of the supply chain as well as in homes.  As the attached National Public Radio article points out, wasting food also wastes all of the resources used to produce, package, and transport the food.  In addition, food waste in landfills produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, as it decomposes.  The attached article provides some ideas on reducing food waste at home.  Here are some additional ideas not mentioned in the article.
  • Shop the “second chance” section of your grocery store.  You will find good food at reduced prices because it is nearing its sell-by or expiration date.  Have a plan for using these items before they spoil.
  • Take a reusable container to restaurants and bring leftovers home.
  • Don’t overbuy.  Plan what you are going to eat before you go to the store and minimize impulse buying.
  • We all like to keep some extra food in the freezer and pantry.  Put dates on the containers and check frequently for items that are forgotten in the back.
  • A large package is not cheaper if you can’t use it all before it spoils.  Buy the right size for your household and eating habits.
