I have seen several estimates of the amount of food that is wasted in the US and around the world. All the numbers are shockingly high, ranging from 30% to 40%. The food waste occurs in all portions of the supply chain as well as in homes. As the attached National Public Radio article points out, wasting food also wastes all of the resources used to produce, package, and transport the food. In addition, food waste in landfills produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, as it decomposes. The attached article provides some ideas on reducing food waste at home.
