Disposal of prescription drugs

With very few exceptions, unused prescription drugs should not be flushed down the toilet or poured down the sink. In the US, we have several options for disposal of unused prescription medication. 

• The medication information that comes with your prescription will tell you how to dispose of unwanted medication.  Do not flush it unless this information specifically tells you to. In most cases, the reason for flushing a medication is that the medication may be especially harmful if taken by the wrong person. 
• In the US, the National Prescription Drug Take-back day provides a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs.  The next one is April 29.  I will do a reminder post in mid-April.  The drop-off sites will collect the drugs and dispose them properly. 
• If no specific recommended precautions are provided for your prescription, remove it from the container, mix it with an undesirable material such as kitty litter or dirt, and put it in a sealed bag or container before you put it in the trash. This method can be used for non-prescription medications as well.  
• Check with your pharmacy on what options are available in your area. There may be a mail-in program.  ​
